New Sculpture: Pencil Sharpener (Squirrel III) 2011

Pencil Sharpener (Squirrel III) 2011

Size: Length 68cm x Width 30cm x Height 35cm
Medium: Mixed Media

Leo Cohen's Pencil Sharpener series are about deforestation.

Resurrected from the ruins of cut down forests, Squirrel III appears both fierce as an enchanting protector of the wild but at the same time endangered, crippled and crucified.

These limited edition sculptures are inspired by Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion” where each painting has its figure appearing ugly and tortured. Some argue that it is us who have made them this way, that humanity are the crucifiers and they the crucified. Similarly, it is us humans who continue to destroy and threaten the natural habitats of many animals through deforestation.

Pencil Sharpener (Squirrel III) 2011 will also be exhibited with The Screening Room Society at the Old Vic Tunnels (Kevin Spacey/Richard III) from Friday 3rd June 2011.

Leo Cohen's Pencil Sharpener series are about deforestation. Squirrel II is of one of Britain's red squirrels, now a rare protected species.

Resurrected from the ruins of cut down forests, the squirrel appears both fierce as an enchanting protector of the wild but at the same time endangered, and crippled.

Inspired by Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion” each painting has its figure appearing ugly and tortured. Some argue that it is us who have made them this way, that we are the crucifiers and they the crucified. Similarly, it is us humans who continue to destroy and threaten the natural habitats of many animals through deforestation.

There were a lot of sculptural artworks by Richard Niman, Tony Brennan...

And also the work of Emma Godebska...

A "Pop" art balloon sculpture which people could build and add to was found to be quite amusing (both in its pun, and also) as an activity, as much so for the adults as it was for the children intended!

There were strange and provocative works from artist Josh Knowles featuring the Arcade-Idea and other social constructs.

On other levels, the children were entertaining themselves nicely with lots of great activities facilitated by the lovely PLOT assistants.

"Pencil Sharpener" resides at House of Fairytales HQ for the moment but will exhibit again at the Old Vic Tunnels before returning back there.

Leo Cohen at House of Fairytales: Onedayland

"Pencil Sharpener" (previously exhibited with rekindle public arts) has been invited to exhibit at The House of Fairytales Onedayland Festival this Saturday.

House of Fairytales is proud to present "The Onedayland Festival" organised by eco-artists collective PLOT.

Divided into individual spaces and installations Onedayland is a community festival consisting of a temporary (one-day) eco-village in the heart of London with each plot a unique space to experience for children accompanied by adults. Young participants can share their dreams for the future, exploring installations by new artists whilst being entertained by regular House of Fairytales contributors.

Established by the artists Deborah Curtis and Gavin Turk, The House of Fairy Tales is a child-centred artist led project which draws on an extensive team of artists, performers, writers, educationalists, designers, musicians, film makers, dreamers and philosophers to create magical, parallel worlds where learning is play and play is directed learning.
Operating across a number of formats from workshops, publishing, advocacy and education packs, The House of Fairy Tales is about making education inclusive, inventive and fun.
